Pink Street
Starting off with one of my favourite instagrammable places in Lisbon: Pink Street (Rua Nova do Carvalho). The street was once a red-light district in Lisbon (think brothels and bars). The City of Lisbon decided to revamp the street and transform it into an area people could visit day or night! The street is painted a vibrant pink and they clean it in the mornings. If you head there for 7-8 am, you’ll get the street to yourself. It is a free street to visit.
When I went in April 2023, I was taking photos and one of the workers came and lent me one of the rainbow umbrellas for the shot below!
Ministério da Justiça
Located on the north side of Praça do Comércio (Commerce Plaza) is this beautiful entranceway to the Ministério da Justiça. The plaza is also a fantastic place to take photos! If you head there early enough in the day, it’s relatively empty. However, it is one of the busiest places in the city and a hub for festivals so be aware of that when planning your visit. The square and entranceway are free to visit.
Alfama District
The prettiest district in Lisbon is, hands down, the Alfama District. The whole are is a magnificent Instagrammable Places in Lisbon. While Portugal is famous for it’s tiles (azulejos), you’ll find that most of Lisbon is missing them. Lisbon was hit by a massive earthquake and tsunami in the 1750s that wiped out most of the historic districts and buildings in the city. The Alfama District is one of the only areas that survived, including those beautiful azulejos. It makes it a wonderful area to explore, and take photos in. Wander the narrow streets and snap photos along the way!
Miradouro de Santa Luzia
“Miradouro” translates to “viewpoint” in English, and there are plenty around Lisbon! The Miradouro de Santa Luzia is one of the most popular, due to it’s view but also the terrace itself. This miradouro is next to the Santa Luzia church. It has a terrace with the blue and white azulejos, a pergola and a wonderful sunrise view of Lisbon and the Tagus River. It’s another busy place throughout the day, but free to visit and perfect for sunrise!
Miradouro das Portas do Sol
Just up the street from the Miradouro de Santa Luzia is another viewpoint: Miradouro das Portas do Sol. You’ll find this free terrasse overlooking Lisbon. It’s another great location during sunrise!
Belem Tower
There are three fantastic instagrammable places in Belém that are fairly close together: the Belém Tower, Padrão dos Descobrimentos and the Jerónimos Monastery. The Belém Tower is a picturesque medieval tower located by the Tagus River. It’s located on the river bank: you might catch it at low tide or high tide! It is absolutely magical at sunset during high tide, if you can get a reflection of the sunset on the water. The tower has a fee to enter, but you can wander the outside for free!
Padrão dos Descobrimentos
I was on a time crunch and didn’t get to visit, but Padrão dos Descobrimentos is a beautiful monument on the river bank. It is found just up the street from the Belém Tower, and another great location for sunset!
Jerónimos Monastery
One of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been is the Jerónimos Monastery. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is a fee to enter the Monastery, and it’s highly worth it! Not just for the photos, but for the ambiance and vibes inside. Note: Tripods are not allowed so you might want to ask someone to take photos of you, or set up your phone on top of your bag if you can. The monastery is free if you get the Lisboa Card!
Graffiti Wall in Largo do Intendente
Check out the graffiti wall in Largo do Intendente. The wall is in a lively neighbourhood, so there’s lots to see to make the trip here!
Time Out Market
Not only a place to visit for food, it’s one of the great Instagrammable Places in Lisbon! A popular food market with tons of cuisine to try from around the world, it’s a fun experience! Grab some food from the perimeter and sit at one of the many tables within the middle of the market.
LX Rooftop at Park Bar
We love a rooftop bar! Enjoy a drink while taking in breathtaking views of the city skyline.
São Jorge Castle (Saint George’s Castle)
I would vote São Jorge Castle as the best place to watch the sunset in Lisbon. However, it’s also the only place I watched the sun set in Lisbon! It does cost €15 to get in, but there are seats along the parapet wall to sit in and watch the sun rest below the horizon. I would recommend going early to explore the grounds, and then staying for sunset before dinner!
Tram 28/Elevador da Bica
Tram 28 is not the same as the Elevador da Bica! I made that mistake while trying to take the photo (on the right) below, so I’m glad I was able to realize the difference when visiting Lisbon. Tram 28 travels from Martim Moniz to Campo Ourique. Your chances of getting on the tram is best at one of the two ends. It travels through some of the famous places in Lisbon, including travelling in front of the Lisbon Cathedral. Note: you may have to wait for a few trams to go by if you want the pure yellow one. A lot of them are covered in ads or graffiti. The Elevador da Bica is a Funicular! If you head to “Tv. da Laranjeira” by walking up/down “R. da Bica de Duarte Belo”, you can get the shot on the right below. You can also ride the funicular! The ride is free if you get the Lisboa Card!
